What Does a Heat Pump Do?
Unlike an air conditioner, a heat pump provides cooling and heating. It can be reversed depending on the season and weather conditions in the San Jose area. And while an AC generates cool air, a heat pump moves heat from one place to another, which requires less energy. It extracts heat from the outside air via a refrigerant that’s compressed to warm it even more. Heat is released by the indoor unit; in cooling mode, warm air from indoors is released outside.
Does My Heat Pump Need Service?
Heat pumps are very reliable, versatile, and efficient. But like all HVAC systems, they can wear out, become damaged, or break down. Signs that a problem may be developing include rattling, groaning, and other unusual noises. A lack of heat from the air that’s blowing, short cycling, or a frozen/iced-over heat pump can also mean the unit needs to be repaired.
Old age can also affect a heat pump’s performance. As it nears the end of its operating life, the system may not work as effectively or efficiently. Ultimately, it will stop working entirely. The manufacturer should indicate how long the heat pump model can be expected to last. If at any point during the unit’s life your energy bills start to increase, have it checked for mechanical or electrical problems. Fixing them quickly can prolong the life of your heat pump.
